Net Zero Affordable Not-For-Profit Housing

Sunflower Court is a Net-Zero-ready 25-unit long-term rental housing development and community centre for Adsum for Women and Children, a local not-for-profit in Halifax and recipient of the first round of Federal Rapid Housing Initiative funding in 2020.

All buildings were constructed with prefabricated panels manufactured by Eastcut in Trenton, NS. The envelope consists of an R-20 slab, R-40 double stud walls, and R-90 roof assembly and will be fully Net-Zero with the addition of (insert number) roof-mounted PV solar panels. The unit types range from one, two, and three-bedrooms, four of which are fully barrier-free.

“When building our project team, we looked for partners who could help us create a development that would not only be affordable for its tenants, but beautiful and environmentally sustainable. We’re so pleased to have brought Passive Design Solutions on board to design the residential units (Sunflower Court) and the community space (Sunflower House). Their expertise is building homes that are warmer, quieter and more energy efficient than traditional designs. By building The Sunflower using the Passive approach, we will reduce our carbon footprint and our power bills.”

- Sheri Lecker, Adsum for Women & Children Executive Director
